The logic behind using a game such as golf or tennis for the relief of stress may be very similar to that of concentrative meditation. In concentrative meditation focusing on singular or multiple objects, images, sounds or thoughts may move the mind away from the source of stress, resulting in relaxation of mind. Similarly, by engaging in an appropriate stress relief game such as golf, person diverts all his or her concentration toward the game and therefore away from the other external sources of stress. This helps in relaxation of the mind. Outdoor games are particularly beneficial, as the fresh air and the natural surroundings are in most cases more relaxing venues for individuals. The decrease in stress hormone levels may reverse the physiological changes of stress resulting in relaxation of body and mind.
